Not to pretend the problem is solved (my monitor just started doing this after working normally for a long time), but I just discovered if you press Ctrl Alt Del buttons simultaneously and hold them down for several seconds, it goes away and you can get back to your normal screens. But I will also try unplugging and reconnecting the monitor at source and computer to see if that works. I suspect it may be a thing with the computer that I will just have to live with using ctrl alt del buttons. I did notice that my screen saver (photos) had been reset to (none) and I suspect that is a function of this problem, because I reset my screen saver to (photos) and it didn't kick in but reverted to the self test thing.
